2026 Election Countdown: Electoral Commission Has Revealed Nomination Dates


Uganda Electoral Commission has declared nominating dates for candidates in the coming  elections, they told administrators  and  Parliament to process the requirements for constitutional and electoral improvements.

The releasing in the year 2026 poll roadmap in Kampala yesterday.The President of Electoral Commission said that the presidential, parliamentary and the local government flag bearers will be choosed between June and October come  2025.

Nominating presidential candidates will take place on 2nd-3nd of  October after the two weeks of  parliamentary contenders which is to be held on 16-17th of September, the  flag bearers for district chairperson and mayoral offices will be nominated 16-17th of September in 2025.

However, the first set of candidates to be nominated to run for offices will be village special interest groups on 2-10th of June  followed by their matches in municipalities.The town councils, and the Sub counters on 14-15 of July in the 2025.

The nomination dates are  two years away from now,  their exposure is  to excite aspirers for  political offices and put distress on officials.The Electoral Commission (EC) warned the aspirers yesterday that it is not yet time for compaiyning.

“The EC would like to caution the organizations and political  parties  that the release of this strategic plan and roadmap is not meant to force the country into a fury of campaign corresponding activities for political parties,organisations and aspirirant individuals,"said Justice Simon Byabakam the Chairman of Electoral Commission.

On Tuesday,the EC told the media  that the main drivers of the costs for the coming general elections include an expected increase in the number of parliamentary and local government constituencies  between several hundreds to thousands.

The Electoral Commission noted that the number of voters have increased to be 6 million more voters than those registered ahead of the last elections rising to 24 million, resulting higher costs to enrol new voters and update the voters’ register as well as print more ballot papers.

The Electoral Commission expect the Parliament to create nine new cities/districts or those it has already approved will come into competition.

Uganda is expected to have eight new city divisions, 37 constituencies, 1,000 sub-counties, 9,000 additional parishes and 3,310 parishes and 9,500 villages come 2026.

It means that there will be 14,000 parishes and 80,000 villages in total, substantially pushing up the administrative and logistical requirements.

However,EC  wants to demand for  earnest to be put in place mechanism for prisoners and for Ugandans who are in  the Diaspora to vote  of which it will require changes to the Constitution and electoral laws.

The secretary general of the Democratic Party (DP)Mr Gerald Siranda,  tasked his non-committal party President General, Mr Norbert Mao, who also work as the Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister, to announce the date of tableing  the reforms in Parliament.
