The US call comes in response to the recent signed Anti -Homosexuality Act which madates the State sponsored discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ people and violating the World Bank's stated policies.
The Anti-Homosexuality law was signed by the President of Uganda Yowerri Museveni in May which has sparked international condemnation.
Anti homosexuality law gives several severe penalties like life imprisonment for engaging in homosexuality act and death penalty for aggravated homosexuality along with 20 years of prison term for promoting or advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.
The landlords are to face seven years in prison if they allow any of their premises to be used by people for the purpose homosexuality knowingly.
However,in June more than 170 human rights groups including ILGA world,the human rights company like Outright international, Rainbow Railroad also urgued the World Bank to suspend loans to Uganda responding to the signed anti homosexuality law.
World Bank issued a brief statement expressing that the anti homosexuality act contradicts with the value of non discrimination and inclusion.
The Lawmakers and other groups conder this response as insufficient and they have called for more crucial action.
On 25th July 2023,the Lawmakers noted that the signed law creats "humanitarian crisis" that it directly contradicts with the world Bank's Principles and requirements outlined in its Environmental and social framwork adopted in the year 2016 which emphasize inclusion and non discrimination.
Anti homosexuality prevents LGBTQ+ individuals from enjoying the benefits of Bank finaced projects and it obligs project implementers to report beneficiaries which they believe that it may be LGBTQ+ to authorities.
US Congress members urged the World Bank as aglobal stardard printer among the multilateral development Banks,they should priorities inclusivity interest in its projects and policies even in Countries with restrictive legal and social conditions for LGBTQ+ individuals.
